LAND SETTLEMENT AGENCY’S NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS DEBATE COMPETITION HEADS TO THRILLING FINALE
24 Arouca, January 17, 2024
The Land Settlement Agency hosted an exhilarating semi-final round of its National Secondary School Debate Competition today at the Bon Air Gardens Community Centre in Arouca. The competition, focused on the overarching theme ‘Be it resolved that squatting is not a viable housing solution,’ brought together some of the brightest young minds from secondary schools across the nation.
The motion debated in the semi-finals, ‘Be it resolved that the law should be amended to allow for the regularization of persons who occupied State lands after 2014.’ inspired compelling arguments from the young debaters and left the judges and spectators with a lot to contemplate.
Emerging victorious were St. Mary’s College, who triumphed over Naparima Boys College, and Bishops High School Tobago, who outshone Presentation College Chaguanas. The stage is now set for an epic clash in the final between St. Mary’s College and Bishops High School Tobago. Meanwhile, Naparima Boys College and Presentation College Chaguanas will battle it out for third place.
The grand finale and the third-place playoff are scheduled to take place next week on January 24th, at the Government Campus Plaza Auditorium in Port of Spain. The event promises to be a culmination of intellectual prowess, eloquence, and spirited debate, as these exceptional students vie for top honours in the competition.
